SEO or Google Ads: where should a small business start?
Compare SEO and Google Ads using your timeframe, website readiness and customer economics, with a practical way to decide where to invest first.
The useful question is not which channel is better in general. It is which investment makes sense for your business now.
SEO helps your pages compete in unpaid search results. Google Ads buys advertising opportunities through a paid platform. Both need a relevant offer and a website that helps visitors take the next step. Neither fixes an unclear service or an unanswered inbox.
Start with the decision your customer is making
List the searches that could lead to a sale. Someone looking for an urgent repair has a different need from someone researching a long-term supplier. A broad informational search may be valuable, but it is not the same as a request for a quote.
Look at the results for a few important searches in your target market. Note the types of pages appearing: service pages, local listings, comparisons or guides. Use that observation to decide what your website needs to explain. Do not assume a blog post is the right destination for every query.
Match the channel to your timeframe
Paid campaigns can begin generating traffic after approval and launch, but profitable performance still requires testing. SEO needs discovery, indexing and competition for relevant searches; results do not arrive on a guaranteed schedule.
| Your situation | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|
| You need to test demand for one clear service | Consider a tightly scoped advertising test with measurement |
| Your important pages are missing or difficult to use | Fix the website foundations before increasing traffic |
| Customers research several questions before buying | Build useful service content and supporting guides |
| You already receive traffic but few qualified enquiries | Investigate conversion and audience fit first |
These are planning recommendations, not rules that apply to every business. Budget, competition, capacity and customer value change the decision.
Work out what an enquiry is worth
Use your own margins and sales records. Revenue alone can make an expensive acquisition look healthier than it is.
Here is a hypothetical example, not a Roovox client result. Suppose you can allocate $200 to acquire a new customer after considering delivery costs and your profit target. If one in five qualified enquiries becomes a customer, the corresponding acquisition allowance is $40 per qualified enquiry: $200 multiplied by 20%.
That figure must cover the acquisition costs included in your budget, not just advertising clicks. If agency fees, software or creative production sit in a separate budget, make that explicit. Recheck the calculation when close rates or margins change.
Check whether the website is ready
A visitor should quickly understand the service, who it is for and what happens after contacting you. Give them evidence they can evaluate: a relevant project, a clear process, a real review or a useful explanation of the work.
Test the form and telephone links on a phone. Check that messages arrive and that someone owns the follow-up. Decide how you will distinguish a genuine prospect from spam, recruitment enquiries and requests outside your service area.
Use the channels together when the numbers support it
A limited advertising test can provide information about queries, offers and enquiry quality. That information can help prioritise website content. Useful organic pages can also become destinations for campaigns when they match the advert’s promise.
Keep the reporting separate enough to understand each channel. Paying for Google Ads does not purchase a better organic ranking. Google explicitly separates advertising from inclusion and ranking in unpaid search results.
Make the first investment reviewable
Agree a scope, spending limit, measurement plan and review point. Decide what evidence would justify continuing, changing or stopping the activity. A monthly report should explain qualified enquiries and customer outcomes where available, as well as visibility and clicks.
