Google Ads gets clicks but no useful leads: what to check

Getting Google Ads clicks but few useful enquiries? Check tracking, search intent, landing pages and follow-up before increasing your budget.

The dashboard shows clicks. The inbox is quiet, or the enquiries are mostly unsuitable. Before raising the budget, find out which part of the journey is failing.

“No leads” can describe three different problems: people are not contacting you, messages are not reaching you, or real enquiries are arriving but are not being measured correctly. Each needs a different fix.

First, test the enquiry journey yourself

Open the actual destination page on your phone. Complete the form with realistic test details, check the confirmation and confirm the message reaches the correct inbox. Ask the person who handles enquiries to verify receipt. A success message on the page does not prove email delivery.

Test phone and messaging links too. Check the number, account and opening hours. If the form relies on an external service, confirm any required activation has been completed.

Make a dated record of the test and its result. This gives you something concrete to compare after a website or tracking change.

Separate tracking problems from sales problems

Compare recorded conversions with actual messages and calls for the same period. Account for duplicates and differences in what each system counts.

Observation Next question
Enquiries arrive but conversions show zero Is the intended action measured correctly?
Conversions appear but no messages arrive Does tracking fire before successful submission, or is delivery failing?
Many enquiries are unsuitable Are targeting and page promises attracting the wrong requests?
Qualified enquiries rarely become customers What happens during response, quoting and follow-up?

Do not treat a button click as proof of a qualified lead. Define a qualified enquiry in terms your team can apply consistently, such as a relevant service request from an area you serve.

Inspect the searches and audience you are paying for

Review the search terms available in your campaign reports. Look for intent that does not match the offer: jobs, training, free resources, unsupported services or locations you cannot cover.

Consider exclusions carefully. A word that looks irrelevant in one context may belong to a valuable search in another. Keep a record of why you changed targeting so the next review can assess the effect.

Check location settings and scheduling against how you operate. If customers expect an immediate response, ads running when nobody can answer may create a different experience from the one your advert promises.

Make the landing page continue the advert’s promise

If the advert offers help with a specific service, the destination should explain that service immediately. Sending every campaign to a broad homepage makes visitors do more work.

Answer the questions that block an enquiry: do you handle this problem, do you serve this customer, what does the work involve, and what happens next? Use a clear heading and a visible contact action. Include relevant proof with enough context to evaluate it.

Our website enquiry checklist covers the page and contact experience in more detail.

Ask enough to qualify, without creating needless work

A form can ask for service, location and a short description when those details affect whether you can help. Avoid asking for information simply because a field is available.

Explain what follows submission. If you cannot commit to a response time, do not invent one. A clear confirmation that the message was received is more useful than an unsupported promise.

Review quality and follow-up before scaling

Keep an enquiry log with source where known, qualification, response time and outcome. Use consistent reasons for unsuitable leads. If several enquiries mention the same misunderstanding, correct the advert or page that created it.

Change a limited number of things at once, record the date and allow enough relevant activity to evaluate the result. Low-volume campaigns may need longer observation; a handful of clicks rarely establishes a reliable pattern.

Explore Roovox’s Google Ads service or request a review of your campaign and landing page. Bring the enquiry records as well as the advertising report: both are needed to understand the problem.
